Spiritual Thought for the Week 2009/7/12
DATE: 2009/7/12
Spiritual Thought for the Week
Paul said, “And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me.” II Cor.12:7.
There are so many handicapped people in the Bible we cannot count them all. Let us recall how Paul handled his. Paul prayed that his trouble be removed. He besought the Lord diligently that he be delivered. How much better that a man ask the Lord for help than to try defiantly to beat his way through life alone. It is no shameful thing to admit weakness. But you say, “God did not answer Paul’s prayer that his handicap be removed.” Indeed, you are right. But follow Paul. See him trudging along some lonely road on a missionary tour, that “thorn in the flesh” pricking him at every turn, furnishing irritation, suffering, and misery. Behold, there walks beside him the Savior, his comrade of the cross, saying in accents of infinite tenderness, “My grace is sufficient for thee” (II Cor. 12:9).
Paul not only prayed about his disadvantage; he kept plodding on in spite of it. He called it a “messenger of Satan to buffet” him. But in spite of all the buffeting, he battled on; he kept going. That is important. Perhaps you are someone who started out in the Christian life with much promise, but one by one the years seem to have stolen away your gifts; one by one your opportunities have vanished. You feel life has sadly handicapped you. Yet have you not one string on which you may play some melody of triumph? Play! Paul did. How we play is important. One man gets only discord out of his piano; another, harmony. No one claims the piano is at fault. Life has discord and harmony. Work hard to play it correctly; it will give forth beauty.
Paul not only prayed and kept going, but he also achieved a great triumph. He said, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed fro his appearing.”(II Tim. 4:7-8.) this brave apostle carried his handicap with him through thick and thin to the end. The end was as glorious as the journey. Are you handicapped? Of course you are. So were Paul and countless other Christians who lived victoriously. Let us do as they did: pray, struggle on, and finally achieve the crown.

Spiritual Thought for the Week 2009/6/14
DATE: 2009/6/14

CONGREGATION & CHURCH CONCERNS:
(English)
1. Today is the first Sunday after Pentecost. We call it Trinity Sunday to celebrate the unity of God. This was advocated by the church as a theological wrap up to the Sunday observance of the life of Jesus Christ, and of the coming of the Spirit to the church. The doctrine of the Holy Trinity attempts to describe the unity of our human experience of holiness as “three persons”” – as God, as Christ, and as Spirit. 2. Today is Holy Communion Sunday we observe the sacrament of the Eucharist as commanded by our Lord. All baptized Christians irrespective of their denominational background are welcome to join this table. 3. Ottawa Joint Cantonese Devotional meeting is scheduled for 2009-06-12to13(Friday, Saturday),evenings 7:30pm at the Emmanuel Alliance Church of Ottawa. Speaker: Dr. David Pao. Theme: Living for Christ. Mandarin translation provided except for the Saturday morning workshop (9:30am-12:30pm)Topic: How to Study the Gospels. Call 613-232-2226 GLCC for details. 4. A Sunday school teacher training entitled “Teach to Change Lives” in Mandarin led by Rev. Hongji Leu will take place in the Emmanuel Alliance Church of Ottawa 4 Thorncliff Place, Nepean. on Jun 12-14, 2009 (Friday night to Sunday noon) Cost: $25 per person which includes Saturday lunch and lecture notes. Contact Rev. Chan for registration and details. 5. Our minister Rev. Congreation & Church Concerns 2009/5/24
CONGREGATION & CHURCH CONCERNS:
(English)
1. The past Thursday was Ascension Day. “He ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty." This is what we recite before Holy Communion in the Apostles' Creed. But what do we really know about the Ascension. In the church we spend surprisingly little time on the events of Jesus life following the resurrection, particularly the Ascension. The ascension was that time when Jesus visibly departed from his disciples and came into the presence of God the Father. It represented the culmination of his earthly ministry. The ascension was the day of transition. When the Jesus of the earth became the Jesus of heaven. 2. Spiritual Thought for the Week 2009/5/10
DATE: 2009/5/10
Spiritual Thought for the Week
John 19:26-27 recorded one of the seven words of Jesus from the Cross. At the moment of his greatest agony, Jesus looked down and saw the sorrowful face of his mother. He was on the mission to bear the pain of the world. But he still could not look lightly on the responsibility of a son to his mother. He knew he can not provide for his mother any more. The only thing he can do is to entrust his mom to the care of John his beloved disciple. He said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
Today is Mother’s Day. It is the day to remember the love of our mother. Taking Jesus example we should look at our mother with a grateful heart and look at our children with a sense of mission and entrustment.
Jesus wants John to behold his mother. In actual fact Mary is not John’s mother. Jesus also wants his mother to behold her son. In actual fact John is not her son. But under the cross, human relationship is readjusted. That’s why in Christ we love not only our own parents but other’s parents too. We love not only our own children but other’s children also. That’s why Jesus said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” (Mark 3:34-35)

Spiritual Thought for the Week
Reflections on Asian Heritage Month
Our roots shape the foundation of our identities. They bring us traditions,
old and new; histories of struggle and triumph; and values, societal and
individual. A Chinese teaching says, "When drinking water, think of
its source." Living as uprooted peoples in Canada, it is critical to our
personal formation to remember our roots.
May has been declared Asian Heritage Month. I urge you to take this
occasion to explore the diversity that is already in our midst. Although
this is a reminder of our multicultural setting, we need to open the circle
wide and progress toward intercultural communities of transformative
exchange.
When we gather at Christ’s table to share in communion with God, it is
not a monthly or weekly occurrence without any effect on how we live as
a community. We remember not only the sacrifice of Christ, but the
restoration and renewal that must continue in our lives as individuals and
as a church. The gift of unity at Christ’s table is offered through the body
and blood of Christ, but the real presence of God is in the gathering of
God’s people celebrating the hope established through Christ’s
resurrection.
I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to
present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is
your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed
by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what it tie will of
God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:1–2, NRSV)
As a Chinese Canadian who is a minister in the United Church, Asian
Heritage Month fills me with both pride and sadness. I remember Asian
women experiencing violence in patriarchal societies, the unvalued
girl-child, women and girls trafficking in the sex trade, the Canadian
railroads laid with the blood and sweat of Chinese migrant workers, the
suffering of comfort women, and Japanese-Canadian families taken from
their homes during the Second World War. How can I celebrate Asian
heritage when I feel our hands are bound and our voices ignored?
Let Asian Heritage Month begin a journey of openness—in our senses,
heart and soul, spirit and body—so that the colors already present in our
lives are lifted and celebrated. Let this month begin a continual
remembrance of our troubled roots and a celebration of the liberties we
enjoy. Let May begin the exploration of the beauty awaiting our
discovery.

not a monthly or weekly occurrence without any effect on how we live as
a community.
Let this month begin a continual
remembrance of our troubled roots and a celebration of the liberties we
enjoy. Let May begin the exploration of the beauty awaiting our
discovery.

Spiritual Thought for the Week 2009/4/26
DATE: 2009/4/26
Spiritual Thought for the Week
When Jesus died on the cross, Peter lost hope in everything. He resumed to his former occupation which was fishing again. Many believers who once vowed to follow Jesus also return to their former life and work before they could see the appearance of the risen Lord. Many people consider accumulating wealth in this world the most important work in their life. They are only concerned about the things in this world. When at the end of life, everything turns to nothing they realize vanity.
Paul in I Timothy 6:17-19 said this. “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasures for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” People who are rich in this life but poor in the next are really poor people. People who are proud in this life but have to be lowly in the next are really lowly people. To have pleasure now and no promise of pleasure in the future means we have no pleasure now and no pleasure in the future.
Therefore, let us be mindful of the future. Let us be prepared and grasp hold of the treasure in heaven. Let’s not pursue enjoyment and benefits that promise worldly pleasure only. We should not only ignore them but also trash them. It is because they are hindrance to our journey to heaven. The story about the rich man and Lazarus, the situation of this life and the life to come, are very real things. If you enjoy riches in this life, you suffer poverty in the next. If you suffer poverty in this life, you enjoy riches in the next. Which life will you choose?
Eight or nine people out of ten will plan for this life only. Very few will prepare for their life in eternity. How sad! They are like people who build their houses on sand. They are like people who want to catch the wind and chase after the shadows. The result is that they get nothing here and now, and they will get nothing there and then. How foolish! Are you putting your hope in this present world or are you putting your hope in God who brings us life through the resurrection of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord?

Spiritual Thought for the Week 2009/4/12
DATE: 2009/4/12
Spiritual Thought for the Week
Today is Easter Sunday. We celebrate the resurrection of Christ. At the same time we celebrate the fact that we are new beings in Christ. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”(II Corinthians 5:17)
In the eyes of God, all men had died in Adam. They are perished beings. That includes each and every one of us. We don’t deserve to live before God. Only Christ meets God’s pleasing sight. Only he deserves to live. Through Christ’s propitiating death he puts an end to the old beings. In his resurrection, we become new ones. We become living creatures again in the eyes of God. This is the basic truth. Unfortunately many believers do not understand the meaning of redemption. They thought they can still live in the old being and continue their lives in the old Adam.
If this is so why did Christ have to die for us in the first place? Thus all who are saved by Christ should look at themselves as new beings. Not only in abstract sense but also in practical sense. Our old selves have become new. Not only we leave behind the old meanings, thoughts, desires, life, deeds and relationships, but also we acquire the whole new person with new life, ways, relationship, hopes and purpose.
Apart from Christ, nothing is pleasing and acceptable in God’s sight. Everything in us is in vain. We have to face judgment and condemnation. We have no joy in our heart because there is disharmony from the will of God. There is dislocation with Christ’s connectedness. There is contradiction with the direction from the Holy Spirit. Our conscience leaves us no peace. We are in constant threat under guilt. What spiritual future or blessing can we get out of there? Outside of Christ everything is old. It has no value for existence. If we want value for existence, we have to stand in Christ, live for Christ, walk with Christ who makes everything new.
In Christ, we have a new position. Being born again we have a new heart, a new spirit, a new life and a new being. Like Paul said, “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”(Ephesians 4:22)

Spiritual Thought for the Week 2009/4/5
DATE: 2009/4/5
Spiritual Thought for the Week
Today is Palm Sunday. It marks the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. People were waving palm branches to welcome him. Christians should do the same today even though the unbelief world tried to stop us from doing so. Those who walk with God can not help it but to cry out their salvation from Jesus Christ. “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his son, purifies us from all sin.”(I John 1:7) Thank God that since we are saved we have fellowship with God. Before, we merely had fellowship with people. People could be selfish, hypocritical and unintelligent. They hurt us more then they comfort us. But having fellowship with God gives us the assurance of love and heavenly benedictions.
Many Christians lose sight of this blessing. We are too occupied with relationships in worldly things. Even though we spend time with God, it becomes nominal and superficial. We only ask what we want in our prayers and don’t bother to wait for an answer. We don’t worship in spirit and in truth. Thus we never experience the joy, peace, grace and blessedness.
To have real fellowship with God takes certain pre-requisites. If we can not speak from heart to heart with God, there must be some obstacles which have to be cleared out of the way. Light and darkness; holiness and filth; honesty and deceit etc. are contradictory terms. If we still walk in darkness, filth and deceit we can not walk with God. Only when we walk in true light and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit we can walk with God. If our life, deeds, thoughts and words were not in accordance with God’s word in the Bible, we are walking in darkness. Especially when we know we have sinned and we don’t want to confess our sin, God’s fellowship can not prevail, not to mention fellowship with other Christians. No wonder when the world stops us from crying out for Christ we become silent.

Spiritual Thought for the Week 2009/3/29
DATE: 2009/3/29
Spiritual Thought for the Week
In this time of Lent, let us learn the lesson of remaining quiet, trusting, obeying, and waiting on the Lord. As the Psalmist said, “I was silent; I would not open my mouth, for you are the one who has done this.”(Psalm 39:9) We need to see the hands of God behind the things he has done for us. We need to obey the will of God on things that happened to us. Nothing could come before us without his permission. We should not blame others nor ourselves when hardship happened knowing that it is God who rules over all things. Only in God we find answers. We won’t find answers in things or in relationships. So let’s not blame hardship on fate. Sometimes hardships just don’t make sense to us. Sometimes God doesn’t give us explanations either. This is the time to learn the discipline of humility, obedience and waiting on God. God has absolute sovereignty. God’s will is always good will. Although we do not understand it now, yet belief and trust will eventually disclose the truth and will make us understand it one day.
God would never let hardships happen without a cause. He has purposes. It could be something in the past that requires correction. God is using this hardship to discipline us. It could be something in the future that requires preparation. God is using this hardship to equip us and make us strong for the impending challenge. In all of these God wants us to see the frailty of our life. Apart from his will there is nothing but vanity and futility.
Truly, all we can do is to remain silent, and submit ourselves under his almighty hands. Our hope comes from God and God only. If our hardship strips us of everything except God, how wonderful it will be to see God still remains. Remaining silent means we fear God, we obey him, we wait on him. It is not necessary to open our mouth to say anything. Things that come out from God are always good things. They are for our benefit. Our ideas and thoughts are nothing noble, righteous or worthwhile. The only best solution is to surrender under his powerful loving hands. In the end we will realize our hardship is in fact a blessing.

Spiritual Thought for the Week
The Bible said, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”(James 1:22) God’s word is for us to do. Not for us to hear only. Those who hear and do not do are people who deceive themselves. They think they have learned a lot, in fact they have learned nothing. They think they have built up a lot in fact their building is built on sandy ground and can not withstand wind nor storm.
If we hear the word of God and do not do it, we are disobeying God. This is serious matter. It is more serious than children disobeying their parents or subjects disobeying their kings, because it is disobeying the law in the universe which causes depravity of blessings and evidence of condemnation. Despite of what you wish or desire, contradiction to God’s will and desire will lead only to disastrous consequence.
A Christian is not someone who has nothing to do, no path to trot, no way to follow. In fact he has to walk on the path in accordance to God’s word every moment of his life. The word is never far from us. It is in our ears when God reminds us. It is in our heart when God touches us. It is not our misunderstanding but our disobedience that cause us to not do his word. Blessed are those who live out the word of God in their lives. This includes all the things we do, think, say, work, and live.
A good and genuine Christian is distinguished from a bad and false Christian not by how much word he listened but by how much word he practiced. God’s word is not just knowledge that comes out from our mind. It is life from within that comes out through faith and through help from the power of the Holy Spirit. One day when we come before God, he will ask us not how much word we have heard but how much word we have done.

Spiritual Thought for the Week 2009/3/15
DATE: 2009/3/15
Spiritual Thought for the Week
Lent began in Ash Wednesday. The color of ash is grey. In Chinese the expression of a heart turning grey means giving up hope. When was the last time you gave up on hope? When we are in trials and tribulations we are tempted to see everything grey. Especially when God didn’t hear our cry for help, we wanted to give up. Like what Job’s wife said to Job, “Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!” This is word of temptation from Satan. How we deter Satan’s attack is the most crucial test of our souls.
First of all, we have to believe God is absolutely loving, good and faithful.
He would never leave us or forsake us. We also have to believe He has good will and nice purpose for us. All the trials and tribulations are for our own good. Although it does not seem that way yet the opposite of what we comprehend will ultimately benefit us. This is something we can’t see in the flesh.
Secondly, we have to strive to understand God’s will. Why does God let this hardship to happen? Is it our sin? Let’s repent on it. Is it our wrong? Let’s correct it. Is it a discipline? Let’s learn the lesson from it. Is it an indication to change course? Let’s turn back to God. May be God is wanting us to learn to be more patient, humble, compassionate to others, obedience to God, unaffected by the world and steadfast towards eternity. Giving up on hope is equivalent to having doubt in God. Do you have doubt in His love, power and faithfulness? You shouldn’t have because God will never be unfaithful or unmerciful.
Belief in God always gives hope. God can make something out of nothing. He can raise the dead to life. When men come to a dead end God can initiate a new beginning. What men think is hopeless, God can restore, change and resurrect. He can create new possibility and make things happen. Therefore, no matter what desperate situation you are up against now, do not give up on hope. “After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord made him prosperous again and gave him twice as much as he had before.”(Job.42:10)
